THE REAL SKINNY... ON HEALTH & NUTRITION IN AMERICA

Welcome to The Real Skinny... where I will dissect some of the myths surrounding the health, nutrition, food & fitness industries in the United States. I started this blog because I am exasperated by all of the misinformation and propaganda we are fed (pun intended) by the government and the mainstream media about our food supply and the fitness industry here in the U.S.

Like many of you, I have long considered myself to be a healthy person. I regularly followed the advice of so-called experts in the nutrition fitness industries about the latest diets and exercise regimens. I exercised almost every day - sometimes for several hours at a time – and I ate what most people consider to be a very healthy diet. I always ate whole grains, low fat dairy, veggies, fruit and lean meats. I counted “calories in” vs. “calories out” religiously. Despite all of my efforts, I was still plagued with a host of issues including excess body fat. My frustration with this predicament – some might call it my obsession – led me to dig a little deeper into the nutrition/health advice I was getting.

My research began with a few magazine articles and websites. Gradually, as I did more independent research, I started to believe strongly that much of what passes for mainstream thinking on nutrition and fitness is complete nonsense. I now spend a big chunk of my free time reading everything I can on this topic – and the more research I do, the more convinced I am.

I am not big on conspiracy theories. I don’t think the CIA introduced crack cocaine into the inner city, and I don’t think George Bush had a heads-up about 9-11. But I have come to believe that the federal government and the agribusiness community have so dominated the debate on this issue that the American people are not exposed to any other line of thinking. And where has this gotten us? Americans are unhealthier and more overweight than ever.

I would like to share some of these concerns with a wider audience outside of family and friends - the poor souls who have already been subjected to my rants these past few years. For their sake and yours, I decided to take my rants to the masses. I look forward to sharing some of what I learn along the way as I attempt to educate myself and anyone who will listen about what it truly means to be healthy in America.

Eat Healthy - Buy Local

I recently read an article about a Swiss woman who died of starvation after giving up all food and water, believing she could live on a spiritual diet of sunlight. Hmmm… there are so many things I could say here but out of respect for the dead, I will refrain.

This story got me thinking though… While most of us know we cannot survive on sunlight alone, do we really know what it takes to live full, lasting, productive and truly healthy lives – you know beyond just “surviving?”

As you know, I often write about the perils of eating processed foods that do not really nourish our bodies. In fact, let’s take that one step further.  These foods could actually be killing us… slowly, in the form of preventable diseases.

Unfortunately for most of us, it is hard to get our hands on truly nourishing foods. And picking up a frozen entrĂ©e at Whole Foods is not going to cut it. In fact, much of the so called “health food” in America is not very good for you – just check out the list of ingredients and see how many you can pronounce!

So… how are we supposed to tell what is truly healthy food?

Well, I’m trying something new… I just joined a local-source food club. It’s a little different than ordering through a traditional CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program. It’s more like a farmer’s market delivered directly to my door. I get to choose specifically what I want to order and when. They make deliveries to my area twice a week.  Works for me!

Through this particular food club, I am able to order fruits, veggies, meat, fish, you name it. Of course, the options are seasonal so you are not going to find berries in January like you would in the traditional grocery store. In addition to the basics, you can also order other local products including snacks and desserts. (And yes, "healthier" desserts do exist!) You can even order canned items like jams and chutneys.

If you are interested and live in the DC metro area, I am ordering my food through Arganica (I’ll let you know how it goes). I have found that they carry some of the local products I really like, including some meat and poultry from Polyface Farms in Virginia. I visited Polyface last fall and bought a freezer full of pasture raised goodness. Unfortunately, it’s quite a trek out to Polyface from my place in Alexandria, and I just can’t get there on a regular basis.

Of course, there are other options for buying directly from local farms like Polyface, but it takes a bit more effort. You often have to coordinate a food pick-up instead of having your food delivered directly to you. If you are interested in this route, please check out EatWild. They have a bunch of resources to help you buy pasture raised meat from local sources all over the country.

Lastly, I will leave you with this very inspirational story of healing. As I was putting the finishing touches on this post, a friend sent me this story. It is a quick read about a little boy named Mason who was diagnosed with a deadly cancer at the age of four and his family’s miraculous journey to healing and health through REAL food. Enjoy!
